Papers II, 1756-1857.

Papers of John C. Warren and of his father John Warren, both Boston surgeons. The majority of their papers are personal and relate to lands and property. These include deeds, mostly with John, to lands in Boston, Roxbury, Virginia, and elsewhere and other documents regarding legal disputes over land in Newport, R.I. among Abigail C. Warren, her brother John A. Collins, and William C. Gardner. John Warren's papers also contain some materials related to his career as a surgeon and professor of surgery and anatomy, including notes on various ailments, letters requesting and offering advice and regarding the payment of his bills, a medical lecture (1795), and a few items concerning the inoculation and a hospital for smallpox. Also included are extensive estate papers for both John and Abigail C. Warren. Correspondents include John's other sons, Henry, Edward, and Joseph Warren, Charles G. Loring, and Christopher E. Robbins.

Warren (Harvard, Hon. M.D. 1786) attended Harvard College (A.B. 1771) and studied medicine with his brother Joseph and with Edward Augustus Holyoke in Salem, Mass. He then served as medical surgeon during the Revolutionary War. John Collins Warren, surgeon and naturalist, was born in Boston in 1778, the son of Harvard physician John Warren and Abigail (Collins) Warren.
